Drum Brakes
Drum brakes are not as common today as disc brakes because they generally are not as effective as disc brakes. However, many vehicles have drum brakes in the rear tires because they are much cheaper to manufacture. However, drum brakes require more parts, so they may require more extensive repairs. Drum brakes are attached to your tires and have brake pads on either sides that are pushed out by the drum when brake fluid flows through the brake line using a piston-cylinder device.
Disk Brakes
There are two types of disk brakes: Fixed & Floating. Disk are more common on modern vehicles in the front wheels. The main components of a disk are the pads, the caliper, and the rotor. Check out the two types of Disk Brakes below to see the differences!
FLOATING DISK BRAKES
A floating disk has one piston and uses fluid to push the piston against the rotor. The rotor then causes the caliber to be pushed in against the disk.
FIXED DISK BRAKES
A fixed disk is a little more complex than the floating disk. A fixed disk uses multiple pistons and send fluid on each side. The caliper never moves on the fixed disk. Multiple pistons cause the pressure to be applied more evenly, making them more efficient. They are more expensive than floating.
