Brake Parts
Calipers: The caliper resembles a clamp that fits over the rotor and houses both the brake pads and the pistons. The brake caliper is responsible for slowing down the tire by applying friction to the rotor.
Brake Lines: Brake lines transfer the power your foot applies to the brake pedal to the brakes themselves by moving braking fluid from the master cylinder to the brake calipers.
Rotors: Also called brake disks, the rotors are the metal disk component in which the calipers and pads clamp down on in order to slow or stop the wheel from spinning.
Drums: The brake drums are typically found on the rear wheels of a vehicle and they rotate with the wheel and axle. A set of brake pads press against the inner surface of the drum when the driver presses on the brake pedal.
Pads: The brake pads are housed inside the brake caliper and apply direct friction to the rotor. When the brake pedal is pushed, the caliper squeezes the two pads together against the spinning rotor in order to slow or stop the vehicle.
Shoes: The brake shoes are essentially tw
o crescent-
shaped pieces of steel welded together. They carry the brake lining in the drum brakes so that when the brake is applied, the shoe can apply friction to the inside of the drum.
Shims: Brake shims are adhesive pads made out of rubber or titanium. They fit in between the brake pads and rotor to help eliminate brake noise such as squealing, squeaking, or rattling due to small imperfections that occur naturally over time.
